Thanks for the head’s up. Really? In this day of CNC machining, it takes that long to make a crank? With the beginning of the V-8 production, they went to machining forged pieces instead of whittling away a big solid round bar to save time (I remember reading in the Michael Dregni book “Inside Ferrari” a stat was stated that a V-12 crank started off as a 300+ lb bar, turned down to something around 50lbs. Needless to say a LOT of machining steps were needed to accomplish that). Far easier (read = cheaper) to machine the precise profile starting from a rough shape in the case of the V-8 crank forgings. Regardless of billet V-12, or forged V-8, they were all hogged out by men on old-fashioned manual lathes and grinders. 25 days is an eternity in the Marchionne era of high volume... How many CNC machining centers would be needed to supply 8000+/- cranks (or 10K if you throw in the remaining V-12s) within a manufacturing year? Peter Sent from Mail for Windows 10 From: Michel Savard The Official Ferrari Magazine is an excellent magazine written by Ferrari. They are very expensive. The only time I got one (actually 2) was after visiting the factory (2009 and 2016) and at the end of the visit they gave the visitors a
magazine. |
