My daily beater is a Honda Fit 2010 with over 130K on it and a trailer hitch that I use to tow  my race bike with will send a picture if you like
It’s a 5 speed
Huge cargo area with the rear seat down
You could put a Cuban family back there!
Gets 35 mpg on the hwy at 80 plus
Roughly 400 miles to the tank
Had the plugs and transmission fluid done by the dealer that’s it
I do my own oil changes
Just changed the battery and front brakes last November (7 years on a battery)
And it’s on its 4 set of tires
That’s it
Bought it new in fall of 2011 when they couldn’t give them away
If you can find a used 2017 Fit buy it
They have a little more power and a 6 speed box
Never seen anything like this car
Say what you want about the Japanese cars they work
Just like Velcro!

Fortunately that is only a problem for California residents. A car that age is probably well exempt from emissions testing everywhere else in the U.S.

As pointed out by others, there are a lot of things that are non-standard on that car, not surprising because a lot can happen over nearly 45 years. I would never buy a car like this sight unseen and without a thorough ppi.

Finally, not DD material. Scott, for the miles you will be driving, take clyde's advice and stay Honda, Toyota or Nissan for now. Find a one owner car with an OCD owner who maintained it obsessively and by the book with full service history and no accidents. They are out there.

In fact, I would bet you could find something very decent for half your budget. It might have 100K miles but that is barely broken in for a well maintained Japanese car. It's only a daily, save your money for something else.

Good luck!

While the last recorded emission test in the VID is 2003 – there ARE county’s and ZIP codes which DO NOT require biennial smog test once the first one is done.

Per DMV - - -

There are six counties [in Kalifornia] that require smog certifications within certain Zip Codes only. These counties are:

El Dorado, Placer, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego, and Sonoma.

This fellow had work done by a San Diego shop – most likely he lives in a non-smog county ZIP.  So as far as being legally “smoged” he may well be.

Scottie

Warning –

First, in Kalifornia the SELLER is responsible for providing the buyer with a passing smog certificate.

Second – this car hasn’t had a smog test since 2003.  https://www.smogcheck.ca.gov/pubwebquery/Vehicle/PubTstQry.aspx  and put in the plate ID.

Anyhow, this car would NOT pass a current smog check with the K&N filters.  No pre-heat available. (as if that really matters)

Third – Witness the 2002 license plate sticker color is green as well as 2017 so the car has a correct green under orange 2018 sticker combo.  But is the green sticker on THIS car really a 2017? http://www.andrewturnbull.net/plates/sticker.html

Even if your state doesn’t require an inspection – with this bit of hokey sticker playing – what else is wrong with the car?  https://www.mytime.com/guide/Smog-Check/Articles/find-out-your-states-smog-check-requirements-with-this-quick-and-easy-reference-guide

Interesting  color combination.

Cheers

Really. I’d gladly blow my budget on a 308gt4 Dino. Unfortunately until this bubble bursts I can’t afford it.

Closest in concept was a lotus Elise.  Can get a 2005 or an ASPT for $20k but concerned about the a/c and daily driver reliability plus my 50 year old back and being invisible in traffic. Oh and the wife hate hate hates it. Convinced I’ll get crushed by a suv.
