Good question.

I suppose as a kid, the allure of a Ferrari, was something so out of the ordinary, so exotic, so mysterious. This was well before the internet, that the only source of info were books and more importantly, magazines. The usual suspects: C&D, R&T, etc. R&T was good for publishing specific issues about Ferrari (have them all) and exotic cars (missing just one). I spent WAY too much time daydreaming in highschool...

Another thing, growing up in Montreal, there was Mr. Luigi Della Grotta who was THE Ferrari guy. I’d visit his dealership a lot and everytime I visited, he’d take the time to show me the cars and the shop. I was just a kid, he could’ve easily just brushed me off, but he didn’t. This did more to foster that passion for the cars than anything else. He’s long since passed away, but I cherish those memories.

Guys, Don't get me wrong...  I am really enjoying these stories about how and when you bought your cars.   I've read a couple of them twice!!

But I originally posed the question “Why do any of us here buy a Ferrari?” as a response to Clyde's question about why do any of us want or need an AR or an AK type gun.  It was meant to provoke a line of thought as to why any of us want/need a Ferrari when a Honda Civic will do quite well to get us the the grocery store, work, dinner, post office, airport... whatever.  That being in context of "if a shotgun will do", why have an AR or AK?

So my responses to Clyde:
Do I need an AR, maybe.  Do I want an AR, yep, got a couple
Do I need a Ferrari... nope   Do I want a Ferrari, yep, got a couple
(and so we don't leave some folks out....)
Do I need a Rolex watch... nope.  Do I want a Rolex watch, nope, stopped wearing a watch the day my wife died 13+ years ago - I have no real reason why.

Why a Ferrari...?  I'm an engineer and enjoy things that are engineered well or at least at practical limits for their time-frame.  Ferraris look and sound cool to me.  Wanted to tear apart something that was already well thought out and see if I could improve upon it.  I had finished a multi-year resto-mod on a Pantera and a friend with lots of cars offered me one of his Ferraris as a challenge to keep me busy.  The other I had bought with my brother before he died.  I don't care what anyone else thinks of the cars, I didn't buy them (Ferraris) to impress anyone. Favorite drives were dark winding roads by myself.  Want to know what I think of car shows....? ask Keegan.

Anyway, the question when posed was rhetorical but I have truly enjoyed your stories of how and when...  Now, if you will...  WHY a Ferrari?  WHY is a Ferrari the basis of the dreams?  Why was the Ferrari a Goal to attain?  Why did you want a Ferrari when a Honda would get you from A to B?  Curious.

Can't wait for Doug's "picture this"....

Rick

Great story.

I too got my 308 at a young age. I’d seen too many examples of people finally fulfilling their dreams at a late stage in life and not having a lot of time to enjoy it. It was the case with my uncle, who I looked up to, who bought his dream car after he retired, only to get cancer within a year and finally succumbing to it not that long after. That really affected me, deeply. Why should I wait all of my life to fulfill a dream only to have it cruelly taken away?

I guess the stars were aligned to be in the right place at the right time. I bought my GT4 when I was 24 and actually debated between getting that, or a brand new Toyota Celica (which was about $1000 more expensive than the 308! This was July 2000). Obviously the Toyota would’ve been the more logical choice, but I’m glad I got the Ferrari...

When I was in middle school (early 1980s), the poster on my wall was a 308. When I was in high school, I made a goal that within 10 years of my final graduation (whether that was college or grad school I wasn't sure at the time) I'd own a Ferrari. I got my final degree in 1993 so that gave me until 2003. I wasn't in a rush until one day in 1996 I was on a payphone at a gas station and noticed an older gentleman (I'll call him Grandpa) on a Harley helping a little boy (I'll call him Grandson) off the back of the Harley. I watched them and thought to myself, "That guy bought that Harley because he wanted it, and it's now part of his family." I decided I'd go ahead and buy my 308 but they were a little pricey for my income level so I bought a Mondial as a try-out. After a year of ownership, I sold it and a week later in 1997 I bought the 308 I still have. And it's exactly the 308 I wanted, the one from my poster (that I still have), a red Euro 308 GTS/QV.

That car has been at Classic Coach for 23 months now but I should get it back soon.

I had to.  My wife is Italian and my back ground was Porsche – and the horses on the badges are the same.  Sorta.
