Yes, I remember those scenes. Not sure if it was dramatized for the sake of the movie, but I could imagine it wouldn’t be far from reality.

 

What kills people from being exposed to fire, especially like in his case where he literally breathed in the flames, is the swelling of the tissues of the esophagus and the lungs, basically suffocating to death. Horrible.

The movie "Rush" showed some of the awful therapies that he went
through after the accident, like clearing out burn damage from his
lungs.  His current lung issues probably stem from that decades old
accident.
