After our house fire (and I won't pretend that it was anywhere near as severe as what Lauda endured), both the guy in the ambulance, and the doc in the ER told me the same thing - "We can't force you to take a breathing tube down your throat, but if your esophagus and vocal cords start to swell [from the smoke], our next option is tracheotomy."  Uh, yeah, I'll take the tube.  As much as I hated it, I'm sure it was better than the trache option.

What kills people from being exposed to fire, especially like in his case where he literally breathed in the flames, is the swelling of the tissues of the esophagus and the lungs, basically suffocating to death. Horrible.
