Rick notes “I just marvel at the scene in "The World's Fastest Indian" when they portrayed Burt Munro filling those cracks with shoe polish...  no problem.”

Yeah – that was cool.  But in his defense side wall rubber just protects the cords – it’s the cracks in-between the tread blocks that’ll throw half a tire.

So what about those ‘alligators’ on the highway left by truckers?  Those generally are the remnants of the “Good” tire.  Huh?  Yeah.  What’s the worst enemy of a rubber tire?  Why its heat.  What causes heat?  Too much load.  So picture this:  one of the dualies goes flat.  That leaves it’s brother on the same corner to carry the whole load - - - for awhile . . . until it over heats and blows the tread.

There is a nice article on this type of disaster in the current “Prancing Horse” on pp 26.

Hmmmm just looked at our GTS’s tires.  Going on 17 years.  Lots of tread.  Cracks everywhere.  Nuts.

Oh well let’s see what the Sunday paper tire specials are – Well heck – OK guys and gals - WHAT IS the hot set up now for 16” QV rims?
