I'd heard the same thing... and I may consider putting mine back that way....  since I've welded up all the factory side marker holes and got rid of those ugly rectangular maker lights.

I had heard or read somewhere that the 308 brake lights were inboard because the amber taillights in the outboard position allowed them to double as side marker running lights (they can be seen from the side past the bodywork).
