Well, I'm an avid golfer. But you can buy top (or near-top) of the line stuff for a pittance if you use your head. This year's top drivers are $500-$1000, but next winter you will find them on sale for $150. Irons? Bought a very nice set of current model Callaways on Ebay for $300. They were from a major supplier, but marked as "Demo". When I got them, I couldn't see that they had ever been used.
No funny clothes, and the booze is always close at hand.
