Re: What ONE thing hurt F1 the most for you?

Totally agree with every idea. From a racing spectator point of view the things
they do better than indycar is the standing start from the grid and venue
selection. Been to a lot of races in both series and Indycar holds my attention
more consistently throughout the race.

Oh, where to begin? I've watched F1 since the 90's. Still watch it, but the
races are really boring 90% of the time.
I like the technical aspects of the sport and that is probably what keeps me
interested.

The whole "cost containment" related issues mean that only the uber-wealthy
people/corporations can even get their foot in the door. What they have done to
try and contain costs is really a joke. They could easily limit the number of
people on the team. Pit stops should be slowed down by only having a couple of
people on the pit crew. That would make stops more interesting. Get rid of tire
warmers. Have the drivers struggle a bit for a lap to get the tires warmed up.
Refueling should be returned (slower stops, more strategies on fuel weight).
Get rid of stupid grid penalties for replacing
engines/trans/turbos/batteries/etc. More testing and practice time would give
all of the teams time to solve issues creatively.
And lastly, make the engines scream again! I don't mind the hybridness (it gets
the manufacturers developing this technology, which is to me very compelling),
but the sounds of the cars is not exciting at all.

I watched all of the Indy 500 qualifying this weekend and it was so much more
exciting than F1. Now they just need a couple more engine manufacturers to keep
it from being a spec series.

So it seems we’re in general consensus that current F1 sucks. Some of us have
been watching it for 60 years (cLyDe!!), I’ve been in it for a little over 20
(wow!). Tons of things have come and gone and it’s easy to list all the issues
that have adversely affected development, action or audience size in some way.

But I’m curious: If each of you had to pick ONE thing you could reverse/change
in F1 to bring back some interest for you personally, what would it be?

For me: Refueling. Primarily because it’s the one piece of strategy that no one
knew ahead of the race. If you qualified well, was it because you had a great
car/setup, or almost no fuel load? Or both? As a fan, if you’re team was doing
badly, you could hang on to your hope that the other teams were running light
and would have to stop again or risk dying on track. If you were doing well,
you were still biting your fingernails that it wasn’t YOUR team that was
running light and might have to stop again or risk running dry. The era of
splash-n-gos, occasional stuck fuel rigs, occasional fires, occasional driving
out of the pits dragging your fuel rig and maybe your fuel guy behind your car
– I miss it all. I certainly didn’t like it when crew was injured in refueling
issues, but it made them a deeper part of the risk-reward system that racing
has been slowly losing as it becomes sanitized for everyone’s protection. It
was the one thing you could always root for to scramble a parade. Now gone…

Next!
