Doug,
It's not so much knocking the crud (sulfates) off the plates as it is settling the crud that already fell off and is building up so it doesn't short the plates out by touching multiple plate bottoms at the same time.

For years, the Sears DieHard batteries were known for lasting longer than other batteries.  Did they truly have a better battery?  No.  In fact, they usually had substandard output values... Why then?... Sears just shortened their plates so it took longer for the "crud" to build up to levels it could physically touch multiple plate bottoms.  But for Ma and Pa Grocerygetter, having a weak battery last a year or so longer was exactly what they wanted...  CCAs meant nothing to their worn out, low compression, smog choked motor.

On many variants, when they had to compete on output, when they could, Sears would just make the case deeper.  Even a half inch could buy you another year of function.

And what's with the French...?   haven't you heard all the politicians speaking Spanish lately? <grin><choke><snort>

OK gang – good bad and the ugly:

When a lead acid battery shows “12.0 v” (all leads disconnected) the state of charge for the battery is . . . . 25%

Here’s a chart:

100%    12.65

75%      12.45

50%      12.24

Discharged - - 11.89

11.89 v will light the dash etc.

Try this – dismount the battery.

Pick it up and hold it about 6 to 8 inches off the concrete

Drop it.  Do it twice to three times.

Knocks off grid crud (highly technical term) off of the lead plates.

Oy – put a rag over the top of the battery and wear protective glasses ‘cause if there is anyway acid can pop out it will send droplets out on to your prized Enzo Ferrari signed T-shirt.  Oh yeah, and on your arms which will prompt a question in about 5 minutes “OW – how’d that happen?”

Bon Chance.

Doug

Larry, test the battery for voltage to see if it is really dead or not.

There were a few times over the past winter that I neither drove, nor even warmed up my 512TR, and -- compounding the neglect -- didn't connect it to a trickle charger.  Predictably, when I then tried to start it, I discovered that the battery was dead. The last couple of months I've had it on a CTEK 3300 trickle charger.  However, when I then tried to start the car (after the charger indicator lights indicated that the battery was charged), it wouldn't turn over.  More specifically, when the key is turned to the initial ("accessories"?) position, all the lights glow brightly, but then, when I turn the key further clockwise to start the car, I think only two lights (maybe for the brakes) glow (dimly) -- and the engine doesn't "turn over."  Most likely dead battery?  If so, recommendations for a replacement?  I currently have a less than 4 year old NAPA 9834R battery in the car.

Not only do I have no idea how I originally chose it, but the NAPA website is now telling me that it is not an appropriate battery for my car.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated; needless to say(?), I would like a better alternative to driving the car to the ghetto and leaving it there.

Thanks,

Larry
