To keep with emissions requirements, fuel mixtures are rather lean. Add in numerous cats (pre and post) and I believe they were still using air injection in the exhaust manifolds. It all creates tremendous levels of heat.

Could be either one 

They both put out a lot of latent heat 

You have to raise the hood after driving 

Your asking for trouble 

And to be honest that goes for the 355 on up

Was it a 550 or 575 engine that eats the OEM exhaust system?

Some time ago I saw pictures of gaping holes in the stock tubing and heat shield.
