I replied to Rob, off-‘List that I tried once to roll it up with the emergency crank and I too had a difficult time.

It’s the mesh of the gears in the power window gearbox that causes that heavy drag (like pulling away from a stop in way too high of a gear). When I replaced my felt window channels, I temporarily installed the window cable pulley WITHOUT the power window motor assembly and it rolled up with the emergency handle with zero effort.

I gave serious consideration at that time to convert to manual wind-up windows because of that experiment. But, after replacing the channels, the speed improved and left it with power windows (for originality-sake).

If I ever win the lotto and buy a 288 GTO, I’m definitely going to pick an example with wind-up windows...

Matt,

The new car just had a frame off restoration, and has soft grease in there. I was surprised to be honest

that it either system just did not turn easily… Although I tried both with the door panels on

but that is what you would encounter in an emergency. I could not find anything in the owners of workshop

manual either……

Rob,

Have you ever taken the window stuff apart? If it's hard to crank with the tool, the whole thing might be gummed up....

Friends,

I had a problem with my Euro GT4 drivers side window on my stopped raising, lucky it turned out to be a switch, which I replaced with the correct early style switch, I had bought many years ago.

I decided to try my emergency window crank as I had never used it, or needed to use it, and was curious how it worked. I got it out inserted it and it felt like something was going to break and with no response from the mechanism, except some clunking, I stopped. I got the one out of my US GT4 only to find out it was different style, and obviously the correct one for these GT4's with a split pin inserted in it, that would engage in the grooves in the hole. But when I tried that one in both GT4's I could not get either one to work at all, and fearing unintentional damage, decided to ask if anyone had ever use one of these and their experience??? I assumed it would spin easily but all I felt was some clunking like the crank was jumping out of the hole and grooves. I have learned never to force anything on these old cars and hoping to hear from anyone that has made this work?
