I have heard the FD fears and myths but don’t know of many with any long term problems.

Like any enthusiast machine, they need specific maintenance and updates.

An aux oil cooler and silicone vacuum/coolant hoses cure a lot of problems.

A lot of the FD “issues” could have been avoided by simply reading the owner’s manual.

Rotary engines burn oil and need specific weight fluids.

They also can’t be started then shutdown cold or they will flood.

Many of my autocrosser friends owned them when they dominated SCCA Super Stock class years ago. There was a recipe for reliability and performance that worked well and resulted in many victories.

They do seem to take abuse really well too...

Is the Z32 better?

The Z is a great street cruiser but the FD is on another level for track use being 600lbs lighter.

You need both ideally.

I will take a silver Z for street and a yellow RX7 for track use.

I think over time, the Nissan was the better car.

No matter what they did, the inherent problems with the Wankel system and, especially the FD’s twin-stage turbo set-up with the rat’s nest of vacuum lines, those cars were just too finicky. Agreed, real great design and a nice driver’s, touring car. Maybe the reason why some people yanked out the motors and dropped in LS V-8s...

A few years ago, with Canada’s 15 year import rule, our market got flooded with JDM RHD FDs, especially here in Vancouver, which the kids bought, souped up and inevitably, wrapped around trees/light poles. My ex-neighbor across the street, his son bought one and fixed it up real good. Put a single turbo on it that must come off a Peterbilt truck. That and it’s intercooler took up about 70% of the engine bay (very good fabricator for his young age, defying the Millennial stereotype). Got real crazy times at our local drag strip. He kept the car in one piece.

The Z32 was, and still is, amazing.

What a great looking and performing car!

PS-I always liked the FC and FD RX7 also.

Ha! Dan and I are friends on Facebook!

Back on topic, I always loved the ‘70s Z-cars and wanted one when I was in high school, but even back then – early ‘90s – they were crapped out. That’s why when the Z32 came out in late ‘89/early ’90, damn was I in love. I mean, that thing looked like a spaceship. They still look great and modern to this day.

I suppose the moral to the story is I should get one now while they are still cheap...

Friends,

Not sure he introduced himself. This is our new GT4 buddy Dan Carroll. He is a pilot for Delta.

Welcome to the jungle Dan!  There are a few pilots here, including me if you count landing the

space shuttle on your iphone!  HAHA

Cool, Charles, yeah, the z cars were quite desirable for the high school/college kid back then. Ours was Jennifer's and then ours. It was white with a red/wine interior, no 2+2. It had the Datsun by Nissan and I thought it was the last year of that, but I guess not. :) Jennifer's Dad partially bought it for her in high school -- she paid for a bunch of it. I told him over the years that someday when we went to sell it, we'd sell it to him for $1. He always loved the car. It had some rust issues (no surprise). It started having some issues where it would randomly die and then you couldn't restart it (something electrical). The day that happened to her in a busy intersection, I decided it was time to collect on the $1 because I was tired of troubleshooting. That was over 25 years ago and I still haven't seen the dollar. Meanwhile, instead of troubleshooting it, he parked it and now it sits at a separate property OUTSIDE of the pole barn he built on the property. I haven't seen it in probably 20 years but my son saw it a few years ago and it's completely trashed with rust and such. It's done.

Carter and I looked at a 240 or 260 a few years ago as he wanted something fun. When I see a rusted out frame I say "no." Floorboards or bodywork are one thing, but....and I think most that haven't been lovingly cared for will see that rusted out frame.

Cool! I had an 82 280ZX 2+2 in high school and a little into college. Loved that car. Eventually I traded it on my C4 Corvette, but I always regretted selling it.

Two years ago I came across an ad for an 83 280ZX 2+2 in Charlotte. It is identical to my first car in every way except that it has fog lights, pin stripes, and no rust (my 82 had common rust issues around the lower hood and t-tops). I couldn’t pass it up since the whole car was less than the timing belt parts for the Testarossa, so I bought it. It even smells exactly like my first car. It needs a little work (I have shocks and urethane  bushings for it, and it needs the driver’s seat pads replaced since they’re squished), but it’s an amazing survivor.

It’s fun how many of my current friends had a 280 of some fashion. So here’s my 83. And for the record, it still says Datsun on the rear badge (Datsun 280ZX by Nissan).

For the Z car fanatic, I don't think it's crazy. I do like Z cars and used to own one (last year the word Datsun was on the car, 82 280ZX). To find a perfect 240 with zero rust just doesn't happen. It would probably cost more to take a used 240 and restore it to this level. Again, I'd never pay that, but I can sympathize with the guy who bought one in high school maybe in the mid/late 1970s and sees this and can re-live youth in a "brand new" one....

It's just supply/demand. There is zero supply. Or I suppose a supply of exactly 1. I wouldn't call it stupid....
