I was shocked at how well that worked when I tried it. Although I went “high-tech” and used a stethoscope with the end removed (so just the hose). Tuning in stereo!

And what about quick and simple distributor timing - by turning the dizzy clockwise till the motor spluttered, anti-clockwise till it spluttered, then 1/3^rd of the way back.  Or balancing carbies by listening through a piece of garden hose.
