Reminds me of the old video of Mika Hakkinen when asked what happened (car was in flames), the answer was "you saw the smoke, right?"

I had a hoot with the Finns.   Their pilots were great guys... but didn’t ever get excited, ever.  One of their guys had a mechanical and went in the drink.   They had him out of the water in 2 minutes.   When we all got back we asked how he was, how was the experience?   He replied “I wush fine, bit wet” and that was it.

Rick,

I have been married to a Finn for 55 years. They are an incredible people.

They are untrusting of outsiders, have tremendous courage, and are relentless.

The word “Sisu” describes the Finnish mentality and is not literally translated.

Sisu can mean “courage”, “determination”, “true grit”, and “honor”..

Sisu accounts for their involvement in WW2, one Finn Ski-Troop Division fought 20 invading Russian divisions to a draw in Karelia.

The Finns lost 16,000 but the Russians were slaughtered. The Russians lost 127,000 men.

The “Winter War”, as it was called, was settled by treaty. I think the Russians were happy to be out of Finnland.

The Russians had signed a non-aggression pact with Nazis, so when the Nazis turned on Russia, the

Finns were considered Nazi allies….which is not accurate, as they did not fight on the side of Nazis.

The Finns have deep seated hatred for the Soviets which could explain the inaccuracy.

Finland is the only country that paid back their war debt to the USA after the war.

Finnish men are indeed introverted and quiet…..except when drinking alcohol.

Then they get really crazy.

Finnish women are extroverts and superfluously loquacious…..which is why the men tend to be quiet.

My Finnish mother-in-law was one of the kindest women I ever knew.

So I asked my Finnish mother-in-law “Why do you Finns never smile?”

She looked me in the eye, pointed her index finger at me, and in a stern voice said:

“Listen, if you had the Russians on one side, and the Swedes on other side, you wouldn’t smile either”

That was it. I didn’t ask again.

Regards,

Dick Petrick
