Niki Lauda explained it best in the Rush movie... I had a great ass.
At Canoe U, I all but failed sailing... dagger boards, rudder feeling wind directions, watching sail movement... I F'ing sucked.
Turn that sail 90 degrees and put some power behind it! It's MINE.
Having book smarts and intimate knowledge of how a plane works can surely help get you out of trouble.
Having a great ass keeps you from getting into trouble in the first place.

He was smart
Most doctors have a god complex
So they kill themselves along with the ones they love
Being book smart has nothing to do with flying
I knew guys who could recite the Dash1 and NATOPS manuals but were dangerous
If that was the case the military would be full of Harvard and MIT grads flying jets
Which is rarely the case
In fact I only flew with one MIT grad ever and he was a marginal F-15 pilot at that
Flying is different
You either have an feeling for it and know this from the beginning
Or you don’t
Rick chime in here
You too Col Luke Skywalker
When you’re with someone who has that feeling that they can do this
Your know
I can’t explain it but you know, it’s just how it is, some people don’t need to be in a cockpit
It’s not a struggle even though it’s difficult from the start for everyone
If your struggling
Your dead
Having flown helicopters and fixed wing I think I know a thing or too
Those are my views on this
Like I said
It’s self cleansing
Always has been
Always will be

What are the 3 most dangerous things known to man
A doctor in a bonanza
An Arab in an F-15
A flight attendant with a chipped tooth! My friend (who has 2 dr. parents) calls all lighttwins Dr Killers. it's the combination of only flyingonce a month (because of workload) in a plane thatrequires immediate corrective action on engine failure.toss in something like IFR or high density altitudemtn airstrips or loading to gross and you've got arecipe for disaster. In the airlines, you're sitting in a sim every few weeks trainingfor that blue line engine failure your entire life. Probably1 in 100 doctors is doing that. They'd be better finding flightinstructors trying to build twin time to fly for them (another friendowned a twin and did just that--he had pretty much a free personalpilot and free gas every time he went up)allan
