What’s the fascination with Porsche?  It’s an honest car.

For other reasons is their engineering.  Beginning with the founders DNA, Ferdinand Porsche designed the first hybrid “mixed drive” car . . . in about 1900.  Lohner.  In 1963 the 911’s basic interio cabin and exterior wind cheating design was pretty much correct – with all the foibles of a rear drive car.  The 911 design has lasted from 1963 to the present without making major visual changes.  Not may vehicles can say that – well, of course the VW Bug had a long long run - - - but wait – that was a Porsche design -  Type 60 in the mid-thirties.

Porsche GmbH is an engineering group – was and always has been.  Each Porsche number is a design model.  Weather for a car, or a transmission or maybe a watch or sunglasses.   It started with design #7 because, in the 1930’s they didn’t want to face their first customer with design #1 – the old man, Ferdinand Porsche said let’s make it look like we’ve been in business for a while and give our first project #7.

So for the sake of an argument, and comparing Porsche to Ferrari both cars are on the same continuum – they are both sports cars.  Porsche at one end and Ferrari at the other.

Porsche says – “ve haff egineered ze bestest sports car undt dis ist vot it looks like – buy it if you wish or not.”

Ferrari says “we are going to design the most bitchenest best looking car on the face of the planet . . . . now where do we put the driver?  The engine?  The gas tank?”

I’ve been fascinated with Porsche since the mid 60’s when I lost two girl friends to guys who had Porsche’s.  So I got mine and have had one since 1970 including the 529th Porsche made.  Dandy little split window car that could corner as fast as it could go on the straights.  Which wasn’t that fast – and NO match for any Italian car with displacement over 1500 cc.

Love the Ferrari – but it doesn’t disappoint me – it IS a Ferrari and the two words that have made it possible for me to own one is . . . cell . . Phone.

Onward

Doug

They are really lightweight.

It is more about driving dynamics than parking spots.

I never understood the 356 until I drove a good one.

So what is the fascination with these cars ?

I mean really

Spell it out because I just don’t get it

I know the P crowd thinks there all that until there is only one parking spot in front of the restaurant and the Ferrari gets it

But this series just makes me scratch my head

I am no fan of the 308 fiberglass crowd, those people are nuts as well
