Same reason people pay 7 (or 8) figures for any Ferrari built before 1960.
Porsche Guys, the real hardcore, Jerry Seinfeld group - are as dedicated as Ferrari guys. Their collections and purchases set the bar. Like when Stroll paid double for the 275 NART Spider and Ferrari prices went nuts.
It looks like a decent clean car. Among the first produced in-house (albeit a bit late in the A series).
Rare even if not completely ‘proper’ with the engine swap. But, it was probably assembled really close to the point where Porsche we able to go in house with their engines (and the motors became much better). So, the swap makes sense.
The old Porsche stuff is particularly rare in the states.
Which leads to - Ferdinand Porsche was a genius. He was on the wrong side but the Bug and the Staff Car (the Thing, in the US) are brilliant designs and great engineering.
Which leads to, his son, Ferry Porsche was a genius. Working with what he had left - after the war - for parts and materials, his father’s designs, and some craftsmanship - he built a really nice car.
And the bathtub cars are just nice. The shape is beautiful, like most of the stuff from that era - hand made, elegant shapes. And the underlying mechanics are pretty solid, his father’s designs having been in use for a while by then. So,
they are nice to look at and easy to drive.
Which leads to, his son, F.A. Porsche was a genius.
The 911, since 1964 and still ticking. (Nothing more need be said)
