Peter, great review! I also agree on the trans hunting.

I thought the car looked good if a bit like an Aston or a Jag.

That is a compliment but maybe not what a prospective buyer may have in mind.

It is not setup to be a track car but a GT car.

In that role, it did well.

The engine power was excellent at 600 plus especially considering the weight of the car at 3460lbs.

There was a little bit of engine vibration through the steering wheel.

I would like a shorter final drive ratio. The engine really needs to be above 4500-5000 for the turbos to kick in. That would help with the lag and reduce the need for excessive downshifting.

The suspension felt pretty good. Turn in was responsive.

There was a bit too much bodyroll in Sport. I find it odd that you need Race mode to clean that up.

Under hard cornering, surface irregularities confused the rear suspension.

That wiggle and movement is not something I would want to encounter at 100mph + in the rain with two people and a boot full of luggage.

The Magnetic shocks did a wonderful job of soaking up bumps. It is certainly one of the best chassis innovations of the last few decades.

Brakes felt fine. Decent bite and progressive as any Brembo ceramic system should be.

The Pilot 4S is a very grippy and progressive tire. It lets you know before you fall off the cliff.

Interior was ok. As expected, the center tunnel creates a claustrophobic feel inside.

I don’t understand the thinking behind the modern instrument panels. There is too much distraction needed to obtain critical information.

I am sure there are options to change the display layouts. I don’t think Ferrari would make it that difficult to monitor Oil Press or Water Temp.

So, the Roma test drive sessions were today (and tomorrow), so I took the day off from work (which also coincided with our Canadian Thanksgiving weekend, so an extra-long weekend for me) and attended the event.

Like all of these latest-and-greatest, I was very impressed with the car. I was surprised at how relaxed I was with the driving experience. I have found with some of their other cars that it’s always a big deal when I get behind the wheel, maybe even a little apprehension, but I felt very much at home, right away with this car. The view out of it is very good, especially over-the-shoulder rear blind spots. It’s a nice size and doesn’t feel like it takes up the WHOLE road (much like my feeling I got when I drove my friend’s GTC4 Lusso). That magnetic shock technology is amazing as it’s very finely tuned. Only subtle differences between normal and sport, but enough to be noticeable.

Only odd thing I found was a bit of a dead feel when pressing the throttle to move off from a stop. I suppose that is something to get used to over time, but was not like previous DCT transmissions I’ve driven from them. I’m amazed they’ve managed to squeeze 8 gears in it. I could see myself leaving it in manual mode all of the time, as I did notice it was hunting between gears during the drive over various speeds. The techy dashboard is too much for my tastes as well. I’m not a troglodyte, but there’s too much going on and I would barely change, or use most of those functions.

Yes, for the Corvette.

Everyone else shrewdly purchased the technology from them.

Roma’s Magneride feels pretty good...

Peter, good points and I think you are correct.

Magnetic shocks are so good...best piece of chassis development in decades!

I’ll be doing a test-drive of a Roma next week. Looking forward to it.

I have felt that these modern Ferraris (and modern cars in general) hide their weight well through all of the electronic controls (steering, E-Diff, suspension, etc) they feature.

Clyde, you are right. The newer cars are very good.

I drove a Roma last weekend...pretty cool.

And not grotesquely over weight for 2020!

Very true!

TRs are the ultimate open road high speed cruiser.

The extra weight makes for a very resilient and comfortable GT.

That same weight doesn’t help track manners. Also, the rear subframe is bolted onto the rest of the car.

This causes some flex at extreme maneuvers...

Hard to beat one for a fast road trip in the 200-250 km/h range.

Solid as can be for that use...

Exactly!  Though TR brakes, wheels and tires can be upgraded you can't easily improve their HP to weight ratio.  Their best use is as a GT car or to attract members of the opposite sex.

I have a 1985 TR…It is a fun car to drive. It is not a track car. It was designed to be a GT car, not a track car.

People who buy TRs today aren’t looking for a track car. If they were, they buy a 430 Scud or a 458 Italia GT3.

Two problems with the TR for track use…Breaks would not stand up to track abuse….The TR is too heavy for the available bhp.
