Clyde…I knew that the Fw-190 (not 109…that was the  Bf-109) was a good fighter, but are you saying that it was better than the P-51?

As for the P-38, my dad flew them in the 14^th during WW2….The branch was the U.S. Army Air Corps then, but it changed during the war to an independent branch to the U.S. Air Force.

I also know that the Ju-88 was a fast aircraft….but as fast as the P-47?…I didn’t know that.

I think them P-47 D could top out at over 400mph (airspeed) at altitude. I don’t think that the Ju-88 could make 300 mph.  

I do believe that some pilots thought that  the P-47 was the first aircraft to break the sound barrier….in a power dive….I think that myth was later disproved.
