Clyde…I knew that the Fw-190 (not 109…that was the  Bf-109) was a good fighter, but are you saying that it was better than the P-51?

As for the P-38, my dad flew them in the 14th during WW2….The branch was the U.S. Army Air Corps then, but it changed during the war to an independent branch to the U.S. Air Force.

I also know that the Ju-88 was a fast aircraft….but as fast as the P-47?…I didn’t know that.

I think them P-47 D could top out at over 400mph (airspeed) at altitude. I don’t think that the Ju-88 could make 300 mph.  

I do believe that some pilots thought that  the P-47 was the first aircraft to break the sound barrier….in a power dive….I think that myth was later disproved.
