Years back when Ferrari introduced the 599, they did an odd introduction event in South Carolina. Paired with International (yes, like International Harvester, the farm stuff), they rented the Darlington NASCAR track. The 599s there were static (along with International products), but they were doing ride-alongs for attendees in two-seated NASCAR Cup cars. I did one of those. The pit exit at Darlington is basically perpendicular to one end of the “egg” shape on the track, so as we accelerated (HARD) out of the pits, it was directly toward the outer concrete retaining wall of the oval. I have no idea how fast we were going when we hit the oval, but I remember thinking that I was absolutely going to die as there was no way that car had the grip to make a nearly right-angle turn exiting pit road at that speed.

Thankfully I was wrong, and I gained a new respect for the Cup cars and their drivers that day. I only did two laps, but it was hard to hold my head upright for that, and I’m sure my heart rate was way high for even that short trip. They are definitely more athletic than some of their physiques let on.

I agree with you.

Never liked armco rails either.

But i don't know what the result would have been if he hit a solid wall.

I remember when the Detroit GP thinking how much faith the drivers had to have in their brakes to floor it with no run off with a solid wall in front of them and a right turn under an overpass.

I never liked the HALO on F1 cars. But today, I must say this saved Grosjean’s life without a doubt.
