Oddly enough, the Powerglide was very popular with racers. The torque converter was eliminated, replaced with a regular clutch in drag racing. For circle track, the connection to the engine was solid. The cars got moving by temporarily reducing fluid pressure allowing the 1st gear plate cluster to slip. This worked OK because standing starts were infrequent. They were strong gearboxes, especially the early cast iron versions. 1000hp in a drag car was commonly handled.
Hans. And anyone that has driven a early power glide GM vehicle can attest to the lack of performance.
Yeah, all through the auto industry slush box referred to trannies that use a torque converter in place of a clutch. Always been that way in my 55 years in the industry. The term was really appropriate in the early days when the torque converters were not very efficient. Did more slipping than transmitting torque.
Hans.
Is it just me, or haven’t I always heard of automatic transmissions referred to as slushboxes (because their fluid operates the gears and manages the operation of the torque converters)? cLydE is using it to indicate manuals, which I have not heard elsewhere. Is this a cultural/regional/whatever kind of thing? Obviously it’s impossible that cLydE is wrong, but it certainly is possible that someone misled him.
😊
Gary I don’t get that
When you look at slush box cars anywhere
The first thing that stands out is
The guy didn’t know how to drive a car with a clutch
I’ve owned Ferraris for years and never replaced a clutch
When I worked at a local independent shop a guy came in bought a 360 stick
I had to drive it because he didn’t know how too!
So why the premium for a car that you don’t know how to drive?
I own a 575 F-1 and I am never looking back
I always drive it the manual mode with the paddles and I never miss a shift!
Up or down and it’s easier on the drive train
, you can’t shift that fast manually and you have all the rpm protections up and down!
I hate to say it but the average Ferrari driver doesn’t know how to shift a slush box!
But there are Ferrari drivers and Ferrari owners!
And truer words were never spoken
And the 6 speed manual in the 550 sucks big time along with the Arnold Schwarzenegger clutch pedal!
But hey let them pay premium
These are they same guys who like radial engines on airplanes!
