It appears from the video that he lost tail rotor effectiveness, in other words the tail rotor was no longer providing anti torque to counter the main rotor.
That’s why the helicopter body started to spin.
If there is an upside to this crash, the pilot crash correctly.
He realized he lost the tail rotor and cut power, and what really helped he was over tress, much like the jungle in Vietnam where I saw numerous helicopter pilots perform the same maneuver. That is why the crew walked away, the helicopter didn’t burn and the tress broke the fall. We actually practice this maneuver many times in training.
That is simulating tail rotor loss.

I saw this on the news this evening. To put things in to perspective, Bowen Island is a very quick ferry ride from Vancouver. A nice quite place, sparsely populated with beautiful scenery... And tall, thick trees.
