As for the 356 crowd, I’ve known many owners who were down to earth racers. They all bought when they were cheap and used to laugh how other Porsche owners looked down at them as if to say “Oh, you can’t afford a newer one?”
356s don’t strike me as much of a status symbol even today. Maybe Freud would have something to say about being driven in the rear.
