I’m not surprised. I don’t think it’s possible to “clean” diesel exhaust to any acceptable standard and have the engine run reliably. It’s no wonder why VW cheated.

And really, diesel’s attributes don’t lend itself well to use in a privately owned and operated car. With large, long-haul trucking, yes, because of the highway system, the engines can be run at a steady rate in an optimal range. I look at it the same way as a jet engine. With a car being used by a citizen and put through stop-and-go traffic, cold starts, heavy on the throttle pedal, that “sweet spot” of maximum power output vs fuel consumption is thrown out the window. That car is then run in situations where you have no choice but to dump more fuel into the combustion process, just to make it perform like a gas engine (which you now have to clean up because it’s dirty). At night, if I’d pull away from a stoplight, if I looked in my rearview mirror, the car’s headlights behind me dimmed as I mildly rolled coal away from them. It would only clear by the time I “shifted” into third (they used a six speed transmission).

The Canadian Smart cars were introduced just prior to the 2007 diesel emissions standards and were pulled from the market thereafter as there was no way they could accommodate DEF and particulate filters. They skipped a year and came back with the third gen model that had the 1.0L gas engine. That car was even worse driving wise! The dealer gave me one for a 24 hour test drive. I couldn’t wait to hand the keys back. Not so much for the engine, but the paddle-shift transmission was worse than the previous generation.

Supposedly, there is a forth gen model that was introduced but I don’t see them on the roads. I think they stopped selling them. I don’t know for sure as I lost interest a long time ago.

Just wait, GPFs were being tested when I left, the PM2.5 spec is tough to meet.

Mercedes snuck a non-catalyzed filter on the S class about 6 years ago.  Didn’t tell any customers, they did it to get the data.

And people thought Ferrari was the only ones that used their customer base to get reliability/risk reduction data.

I had no idea those things (Smart) were such a pain (literally and figuratively) to work on.  Yikes

I own two diesels, Kubota and Caterpillar.  Both are PRE Tier IV final.

I'm right there with you Peter, given the current state of Diesel emissions equipment (DPF regen) I won't own any newer diesel anything.

You’d think that the car being so small, that it would makes things easier to access – Not only it was more difficult, but you’d end up getting your hands pinched or cut in the process.

The Smart cars we got here in Canada were oil burners... Literally. Notorious for going through EGR valves, I would have to change one out with a cleaned/rebuilt one with each engine oil change! When I had it done by the dealer the first time around, I thought they were ripping me off with labour (around 4 to 5 hours). When I did it myself the first time, it took me well over 10 hours! Just like the headlights, I had to remove the whole rear body work to get to it. By the time I got rid of the car, I was able to get it done in their time.

The last time I’ll ever own a Mercedes product and the last time I’ll ever own a diesel.

Peter,

Ha!  We have a good friend who is a militant feminist, tree hugging socialist... otherwise a sweet lady.

She doesn't mind having her husband do things for her but only if she is capable of doing those things as well.  That part of her quite endearing.   She had her Smart car for about 4 years and was glad to be saving the planet in it.  When one of the headlights burned out, she took it on herself to fix it.  She researched several tutorials on YouTube and dug in for herself.   About 4 hours in, she remembered her first Chevy from 70s and how she changed those headlights with 3 screws in 15 minutes.   It took her most of the day to put the new bulbs in the Smart car, but she did it.   The next day she took it down and traded it in on a Tesla S.  After the Smart Car, she's often alluded to the Tesla being too big.

I can't wait to see her response to the May video, I just sent it to her after you jogged my memory on the issue.

She once inquired about the SAE port I have on my Kubota that is there for Battery Tender.   I wonder if she'll attempt installing a port on the Tesla herself...  or trade it in on a Leaf....

Cool, now I know how to break into the front trunk of Tesla Model S!

Not as bad as changing the headlight bulbs on a Smart car:

Ah, this was enjoyable with my morning coffee, nothing like Captain Slow crapping on his Tesla.

Glad to see that the buffoonery in the design and engineering teams hasn’t changed since I left the industry.
