Coulda, woulda, shoulda: I kick myself because I could’ve bought a 328 in 2008 (located at a dealer in Houston) for $35K USD. Yep, Toyota Camry money. I passed because it had a burnt out Marelli Microplex ECU. I figured if that was burnt out, what else would be broken?...

 

I had my budget set and I bid on six different Ferraris this past Spring on BaT. I got wiped out by five figures on each one. It’s not just the purchase price, I had to consider the exchange in CAD, shipping, taxes and import inspections. All totalling up to an additional five figures on top of the purchase price. I didn’t budge from that limit. If you remember, I also inquired if any Listers could inspect a 328 for me in CT back in May and both Lash and Dominic offered to help out (which I’m totally indebted to. Thanks guys!). They gave me honest assessments of the car and I offered the dealer an amount based on that. I was outright rejected (and the dealer lied to me about current ownership which put the kibosh on any further dealings [thanks to Erik Nielsen for shedding light on the background of the car. Also sold on BaT...]).

 

I tried to be pragmatic, realistic, I followed various price guides and my own experience of being in this for 20+ years now. The market is not functioning in this manner. It’s gone crazy and I can see how this is playing out.

 

To paraphrase the saying: “don’t hate the game, hate the players”.

 

That’s why everything worked out in my favor with the Mondial. I worked out an offer below asking price that we were both happy with and I didn’t have the hassle of importing the car. It was located in town. To be honest, I think I’m way better off with this and the main thing is I love it. Win-win.

I’ve had a front-row seat to this game and I’ve seen the frenzy. As you point out, out of all the “modern classic” Ferraris out there, the 328 is hard to beat and everyone has caught on to this, that’s why prices are going crazy.

No don’t get me wrong
