UPDATE: 512TR Check Engine Light (1-6)
From: Douglas Anderson (dntdock.net)

Rob sorta asks - Is the CEL commanded ON if the gas cap is left loose?

Loose, off, or the seal no longer seals properly.

Only on OBD II vehicles.  MY 1995 on some MY 1996 on the rest.

It wont happen immediately.  It’s a two trip fault.

And a trip is loosely defined as vehicle operation including a startup, run-time, and shutdown that allows the OBD II PCM to operate one or more of the monitors.  There are 11 monitors in most OBD II vehicles.

Cheers

Doug

Do the Ferraris engine light come on when the fuel cap is on tight enough also?

This has been the number one problem of every other car I've seen that on.

Minor cause is corrosion?

Nope.

Your OBD system dumped ALL the monitors.  Odds are you’ll see your CEL again once the monitors have tried to run.  Go get a smog test and find out how bad you fail.

Vehicles DO NOT heal themselves (nuts) so what EVER set that CEL the first time it is still there.

Find the problem (which now is very hard to do since all the tattle tails are gone).

Drive your car in good health and keep us posted.  Especially me – heh heh.  I could be wrong.

Onward

Doug

This morning first tried simply restarting car. Same result (i.e., Check Engine CYL 1-6 again illuminated). So turned off engine and tried a suggestion passed along by Clyde: turning off battery switch/knob for about a minute, then turning it back on and restarting the engine.  Voila! Check engine light disappeared. I believe Clyde's theory as to likely cause is minor corrosion of wiring over the years. Regardless, the light has disappeared -- at least for the time being.

I guess that fellow Clyde really knows something about cars -- especially including the 512TR. 🙂

Thanks to everyone who replied -- and of course special thanks to Clyde.

All,

Just as arriving home this morning from a relatively gentle drive (highways) of an hour or two, check engine light lit. Most likely cause O2 sensor? I'm due for annual inspection anyway, so will certainly have mechanics troubleshoot -- but am I correct that low risk of significant damage that might result from driving it about 10 miles despite check engine light?

Thanks,

Larry
