Ah ah ah – good one guys. Frankly it’s also driven by fuel used per distance . . . mpg or L/100km. Mostly to do with NHTSA CAFÉ standards. Vehicles have to move air out of the way. For the most part all air is about the same density at sea level and cars need to be streamlined to punch a productive hole in that mass. Ergo most cars look the same today . . . sorta. Ever see gray body NASCA racers without their logo wrap? Mono colored jelly beans. Good book – “All Corvettes are Red” explains CAFÉ when the design engineers get together at their weekly conference to explain their component parts design. Report card: OK Mikey, how’s that fuel pump? Good boss – we have it down to 3 pounds 7 ounces. WHAT? Knock off 10 ounces . . . that represents .00003 mpg and a lower 0 to 60 mph of .0006 seconds. NEXT I asked my acquaintance Freeman Thomas (father of the Audi TT and new Bug) how much fun it must be to be in automotive design. Nee nee he responds – show the wrong person the wrong concept and you’re issued a cardboard box for your private things at the snap of your boss’s finger. (Please do return the box). *sigh* Doug From: Ferrari <ferrari-bounces+dnt=dock.net [at] ferrarilist.com> On Behalf Of Rick Moseley Agreed Peter. "Form following Function" seems to have given way to "because we can". One of my pass-times when traveling public roads is to look for the outlandish cut-outs, creases and voids in modern bodywork that are then filled with segments of head and tail light bodies. Makes you wonder if a major proponent of the legal drug movement were car designers. I got a laugh at the marketing wanks "Eye Catching Design" on the new Honda Clarity... certainly a design by committee with 5 groups getting a piece of the car and none of them allowed to see what the others were doing. You could get away with that back in the ‘80s as it was that last coke-fueled hoorah left over from the 1970s spaceship school of design. It’s why I really appreciate the look of the new Roma. It’s a really nice clean shape that introduces new features to the traditional elements that (maybe) Ferrari had been hanging onto for too long. Without all of the extra stuff that seems to have become de rigueur (slats, slashes, scoops, creases, etc). This car has really grown on me in just a short time since it’s introduction. My Mondial gets compliments every time I park it somewhere. People are shocked when I tell them it’s 32 years old... Peter Sent from Mail for Windows From: Douglas Anderson Lash posted “All wonderful designers and shapes.” List Good list Lash . . . Sports car design in general – lets take Porsche and Ferrari as sports cars on the same continuum. Porsche does it’s “Form Follows Function” schtick and says “like it or leave it.” Ferrari designs the sexist most bodacious beauty’s and then asks – where do we put the gas tank(s)? Passengers? Luggage . . . . Gotta love our 308GTS, exceptin’ for changing sparkplugs, carrying Hershey bars in my luggage, doing a suspension over haul . . . .
