They were obviously better at it in 1902...  and 1942.
In the mid 2000s, my girlfriend was driving a VW station wagon that was getting a bit long in the tooth and started looking for something new.  Hybrids were starting to appear.  I had some insider info from a Shelby Club member who worked in Stuttgart that they were working on a small diesel hybrid... early testing was nearly 80 mpg.   We waited, I talked to Klaus, we waited, talked to Klaus...   After working on it for over 5 years, VW scrapped it.   She got a Toyota Venza.

But in 1902 Ferdinand designed the first hybrid diesel / electric or mixed drive car for the Egger-Lohner concern.  Not so fast eh Prius?  Porsche also designed a hybrid tank – the Tiger.  That pissed off the French.
