I Never had an M1.  My brother did for about 5 months while I was away at flight school.  Never saw it in person.  Closest I came was when Peter Garrett wrecked his Lola at Monterey and hurt his foot.  His wife drove him home and he asked me to drive his M1 back to their house in Santa Rosa.  He offered me the car but was already looking for "fix the Lola" money.  No thanks.

I liked the car...  supercar, no.  But a great car for what it was.  Hands down, much more refined than the Pantera.  M1s just had those hideous flat plane slotted wheels.  They made the Porsche phone dial wheels look good.  If those flat face wheels were Giugiaro, he gets an F for wheel design.

Years ago I saw a black M1 with Silver BBS snowflake wheels at Mario Andretti's winery (Ferrari event... you know I like my grape juice before it goes bad).  Those wheels really woke up the look of the M1.   They made an iconic car truly beautiful.  I saw some copper colored concept M1 in a magazine...  they took the M1 wheels and dished them, sculpted the slots...  still ugly.

Yes, the original contract was with Lamborghini to build it. The chassis was designed by Dallara, built by Marchesi with bodywork styled by Giugiaro and produced in Modena.

I still really like them just wish they were $150k instead of $100 million or whatever they are this week.

BTW- the BMW M1 is one of my favorite Italian cars ever.

 

They were at $50k back in the day when I was first looking at them.

 

I have never driven one but friends who have said they were not very exciting.

 

I think the BMW engine is really well done but not enough drama to match the chassis and bodywork…especially at today’s values.

But I thought the wide body or "G" were done by Peter Stevens before he went on to do the McLaren F1.
