Actually, no. But if conditions are good and they launch north, we see them. On Nov 11, 2021, at 11:57, Anthony Bauco <tbauco [at] gmail.com> wrote:
Are you close to Vandenberg?
Scottie, that must have been some sight at night!! Every now and then, if conditions are perfect we can see the ones from Vandenberg if they are at night... but no sound.
Apollo 11 landed on the moon on my 10th birthday. We were living in Georgia (Warner Robbins AFB) at the time so my Dad took me down to Cape Canaveral to see the launch. Saturn V at 4 miles away caused your ears to go into over-pressure static, even with ear plugs. My chest was pounded by the noise. My legs vibrated. My guts gurgled.
Tactile? Visceral!
I asked one of the NASA engineers that was with us how loud it was. Just a tad over 204db He said that if you were within 500 feet of the rocket the sound alone would be loud enough to melt your skin.
For reference, He said the atomic bomb was measured at 250db
If the weather cooperates- you can see them from our house, on the other side of the state.
Still nothing in comparison to seeing a shuttle launch from 4 miles out. Tactile.

One of the astronauts that went up last night was an F15 pilot and another was a doctor (military, I think). Night launches are really impressive.
Yep, and to you too Col. Romero! as well to Luke and Robert and any other who have served.
And a special appreciation to a certain Coastie who is serving today.
Thanks for the text Clyde, it was a nice thing to wake up to.
Dear Colleagues:
Reflect upon and appreciate this Veterans Day and what it means. I am grateful for your individual and our collective service to this Nation.
PS I know there are a lot of lurkers out there !
