Just like all of the Hamilton fanboys who are sleeping in puddles of their own tears right now, you’re wrong. He didn’t change the rules, the rules (article 15.3) specifically state that as the race director Masi can do whatever he likes with the safety car and during safety car periods. So, for him to send forth the intervening cars between Verstappen and Hamilton in the interest of ending the race with actual racing, which all the teams, including Mercedes (and in fact, Merc actively lobbied for it through Niki Lauda, to whenever possible not end races under caution/SC/VSC), have been saying they want all year, rather than ending under SC/VSC/yellow flags) is not only within his remit, but within the rules and within the direction he’s received from the teams over the course of the season.

Well, NOBODY IN THE WORLD expected the race director (Michael Massy) to change the rules 1 1/2 lap before the end. ALL CARS must get in position (unlap themselves) before the race can restart. Even then, a full lap has to be done still behind the pace-car with everybody in the correct order, NOT just the first 2.It would have been boring to finish the race on a yellow, but that's racing. Blame it on Latifi who was fighting for 15th place. F1 is not Nascar, where even after 4 hours of racing, they make sure they get a photo finish any which way they can find. That should have been an easy win for Hamilton and an 8th championship. Even Christian Horner said to the commentators a few laps before the incident 'We need the racing gods to come with a miracle'.Michael Massy made that miracle happen.Have you noticed Toto Wolff hasn't been heard yet ? He must be ballistic.Michael Savard (1981 308 GTSi)

the Safety Car interval and put on new, probably Soft, tires? When I was
watching the race, my wife came in and said, "Its Over". My reply was, if
there is an accident, anything can happen. You have to play your best game
all the way to the end. It looked like Mercedes thought that they were "home
safe and dry" and stopped pushing. Even Hamilton questioned the tire tactics
(strategy is an often misused word).
