About RPMs...

 

A good friend of mine passed away several years ago. He was an older gent who emigrated from Australia. He had a passion for Alfa Romeos and had a long list of the greats (including a post-war Freccia D’Oro). His most famous – and notorious – Alfa was a 2600 that he raced locally and up-and-down the West Coast. He nicknamed it Ms. Piggy. This guy raced balls-out and pushed this car and then some (had it on it’s roof on a couple of occasions). He noted that he’d regularly wind the motor to 9,000RPM and remarked that it was quite happy there. BUT, it was getting there that was intimidating because from about 7 to 8,000, the motor felt like it was going to grenade. He could barely hold the steering wheel, the NVH was that bad. Once beyond 8 grand, it smoothed out and had plenty of power. Amazing considering the design was adapted from the four cylinder series and further engine development was cut short. A design heralding from the ‘50s.
