Back in the mid 2000’s when I was looking for a TR ( never bought at the time) I wanted to have a Swiss car in the U.K. 1. Because it was LHD. 2. Because the exchange rate was very favourable. 3. Most importantly the Swiss had a reputation for never fixing anything, just replacing anything broken with a brand new part. The tight restrictions and heavy inspections meant the Swiss cars were the best of the best in used Ferraris. Everything was kept perfect( compared to U.K. scars) and looked like new. I know lots of people that bought and imported Swiss cars.

I would go there again but now the exchange rates aren’t favourable and everyone else in the used Ferrari game has figured it out….

My best friend was born and raised in Switzerland (northern part of Zurich). He moved to Canada as an adult, so English is his second language (but picked it up while still living there), Swiss-German being his first.

He is the smartest person I have ever met. Both a hardware and software engineer, no matter what this guy touches, he can figure it out. Also happens to be a leading, worldwide expert on the Alfa Romeo 2600 model (an active member on the AlfaBB).

When we’d get together at our monthly car club meetings, we’d spend hours talking about everything – cars, politics, women, you name it. When COVID hit and we couldn’t meet anymore, we’d spend hours talking on the phone.

Simply put, I have the utmost respect for the Swiss people and their culture...

Getting back to Ferrari content, as far as I was aware, their emissions standards are on par with the U.S. and if you look in the parts catalogs, the parts are the same (cats, air injection, mufflers, etc). What they do have incredibly high standards though is with testing and inspections. Their cars aren’t crap, but well taken care of.

In fact, during my search for a 328, it was because of their high quality conditions that I was considering importing from Switzerland and he offered to help me look at various cars for sale over there (through his connections). The cars would need nothing really to be approved for registration here in Canada.

Late Summer 85 we were conducting exercises with NATO. 6 or us flew into Dübendorf as guests of the Swiss Air Force.  Keep in mind the personal space for luggage on an F-14 is about the size of a Ferrari Glove Box...  a diddy bag with underwear, socks a tooth brush and a razor is about all that fits... if you are lucky your toothpaste isn't frozen.   As a nugget, I was surprised I got to go.   Well, as a member of a foreign military you are not allowed off Base in uniform and all I had was the flight suit I was wearing...  But they found me something to wear.   My blonde hair and a baby blue Adidas jogging suit with my brown flight boots... everyone knew I was military.  All the girls thought I was Russian but they did tell me I didn't smell like a Russian.  Fun country.

Been to Switzerland a few times, always had a great time. Local officials would drop you off on the doorstep of the hotel after staggering out of the bar. Got thrown out of a casino for placing my bet in roulette after the ball dropped. And escorted out of a girl-and-mule XXX show for not paying admission. Fun country.

Swiss = strictest emissions?  Hah – not to mention sounds.  Requires different gearing . . . . so I am told.

I have never been to Switzerland but have the highest degree of appreciation for the great things they seem do mechanically.

Gotta hand it to them – stayed out the major wars and supply the Pope with guards.

That might be their secret.

CLyDe,

There’s no vaccine for people with more bucks than brains. And a Swiss market vehicle has the STRICTEST emissions requirements on the planet.
