Interesting, I was going to respond similarly. I remember going to the DC auto show in 2012 and seeing the solar panel on the roof of the Prius and then going to the Tesla stand and asking why not solar on their cars. They responded that there is a lot of cost involved in embedding solar, and the benefit would be powering the climate control fan.

Solar has been tried going back to the 2012 Prius (which just powered the A/C), the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid has panels in the roof.  I've seen reports that say an hour of sunshine on that system will give you 2000 feet of driving.
