FIA Answers Max Verstappen's 'Turtle' Safety Car Remark

Aston Martin and Mercedes are splitting F1 Safety Car duty in 2022, and Verstappen isn't thrilled.

Formula 1’s governing body, the FIA, has reminded drivers that safety—not outright performance—is the main purpose of its Safety Car.

An unusual statement was issued in the aftermath of some criticism of the speed of Aston Martin’s Safety Car during last Sunday’s Australian Grand Prix.

Since 2021, Aston Martin has joined Mercedes in being the official supplier of the Safety and Medical Cars at Formula 1 Grands Prix.

Aston Martin provides its Vantage for 12 Grands Prix, while Mercedes supplies its AMG GT Black Series at 11 events. Australia was the first round of 2022 to run with Aston Martin’s cars. According to specification sheets released Mercedes’ AMG GT Black Series has around 200 hp more than Aston Martin’s Vantage, at 730 hp to 530 hp.
