There are also those who (only from their own perspective) often tend to see malice where none exists nor was intended.
(ie: the "Aviation is self cleansing" discussion)

Even when an individual has an amazing accomplishment (and this guy did), if they violate rules (rules, they may not even be aware of) and the powers that be have no warning of their actions... they can send certain strategic organizations into very serious motions with very serious consequences at very serious amounts of Tax Payer money being spent every minute of an event.  So yes, I do care about what things cost when it is Tax Payer money being spent because someone is out "hot dogging".  The "space" (NAS) above FL600 (class A) is not a free-for-all playground.

Fortunately, Hans had the right information to exchange. It was done properly... and was a rousing success.

It may seem to be in the "middle of nowhere", but that "nowhere" is in middle of an area that includes NAS Fallon, Beale AFB, Sierra Army Depot, Kingsly (Oregon) ANG, Nevada National Guard - Winnemucca...  I could go on but you get the point... not exactly nowhere.

Oh... The first two have huge restrictions on their air space.  And just a bit further south of Fallon is THE MOST restricted air space on the planet.    So an object moving at Mach 4 above Class A is going to get attention.   Fortunately it was expected.

That makes sense.  They launched from the middle of nowhere.

The off-topic posts have been...interesting...lately.  Maybe it is just me but I hate seeing people shitting on other people's successes or good fortune.  I don't care who pays what for a car or a hotel room.  Good for them.  Nor do I feel the need to crap on, what appears to be, quite an accomplishment.  It reminds me of the seven deadly sins and, in particular, these two:

Pride is excessive belief in one's own abilities, that interferes with the individual's recognition of the grace of God. It has been called the sin from which all others arise. Pride is also known as Vanity.

Envy is the desire for others' traits, status, abilities, or situation.

You're over thinking.

The rules for this activity are very clear. From a technical standpoint, the rocket must pass design and construction inspections. Took 2 years for this guy to design and get approval. Oddly enough, the feds allow amateur rockets to be self policing, by the NAR and Tripoli.

As for the flight, different launch areas have different clearances. Black Rock Desert is one of the very few with an unlimited ceiling.

I've been to Brothers, OR where they have a 20k ceiling, but that can be extended to 50k briefly by calling the FAA. I've stood beside the guy who made the call shortly before someone put one up to 32k.

Amateur, uhhhh, yep.   Had this happened in the 50s or 60s, way cool.  But you’re looking the same direction I was thinking.   Was this registered with the FAA (I have a niece, lawyer type, who works on this stuff after leaving NASA).   Was CINCNORAD notified?   Something entering NAS at Mach 4 got someone’s attention.   If it was all registered, all is good.  If it wasn’t, there will be a knock on the door and questions asked.  Even at only 4° deviation, that’s 20,500ft (4 miles) off line at apogee… wind direction, descent velocity, cross section, nearest habitation?  This could go from too cool to really dumb in a heartbeat.

Not like school kids launching an Estes.

Damn that is cool.

What does it take to launch and fly a rocket? I mean, this is serious crap. Surely it must take clearance from the military to do something like this (or do you just do a Kim Jong-un and fire it anyways?).
