Anthony,
But you have to remember WWII, Korea and even Vietnam...  While many rose to the occasion and volunteered, many were being conscripted; officers and enlisted alike.  There were people being put into positions they shouldn't be in.  All they wanted to do was survive the war, get out of the service and go home.  I'm sure your wife's grandfather told you the absolute truth.  The military is no different from big business... often folks are promoted to their level of incompetence, especially in war time.   But there are those who chose that path, and took the job seriously (Clyde/Luke/Taz - I think he still lurks here).   But even in private, with peers...over beers,  I kept my mouth shut regardless of what was in my head. My beefs were minor and few.

I'm sure some really bad leaders were shot by their own troops on the battlefield.  Perhaps rightfully so.  (on both sides)

If you were a fan of Animal House, you know who Douglas Neidermeyer is. At the end of the movie the graphic says he went into the military and was killed by his own men.  It's an often missed nuance, but in the "Twilight Zone" movie 5 years later there is a line when the guys are in the swamp and someone says "we shouldn't have fragged Lt. Neidermeyer".   Fragging wasn't common but was present in Vietnam.   The action of rolling a live grenade into someone's tent/foxhole during an attack that you/we (rhetorical) thought needed to go for everyone's safety.

Rick,

I didn't mean that you would have mocked, insulted or criticized a superior in front of them.  I meant, in private, with peers.  Hell, my wife's grandfather DID land at Normandy and he told us many stories about way worse than insults being expressed in the trenches.  There were officers who were in real danger from their subordinates.  Some officers were admired and some were very much the opposite.  Being on the same battlefield didn't matter if the officer was detestable.  We are on the same page with Milley.

Anthony,
I can't/won't speak for Clyde, but I can tell you 100% I never mocked a superior officer.  It's a first class violation of the UCMJ and will get you busted down in a heartbeat.  I worked too hard to get into that front seat of a fighter jet.   A dream I had since I was a little kid.  Regardless of what thoughts may have been in my head, outwardly, there was never a hint of mocking.  I bottled it up and it fueled my determination.   Fortunately, those thoughts were few and far between.  I had good COs.

That said, that life is behind me.   Since the first Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Omar Bradley, I think Milley may be the worst I have ever seen or studied.  I respect what he has done in his career FOR this country...  I have utter disdain for what he is doing now TO the services in the name of political favor/correctness/wokeness.  I find it amazing how far that position has fallen since Mullen (2011).  "Weasel" is appropriate.

As to your "trump card"...  until you've been there, you wouldn't understand.  Perhaps, psychologically, one can't.  So, I'll not waste my time or yours trying to explain it.  All I'll say is - it changes you.    Good?  Bad?  Jury is out.   If I get the chance, I'll discuss it with the man upstairs.

Frankly, neither do you.  And tell me that you never mocked a superior in your days in the military?  Please, we all know the upper levels of every branch is infested with many self-serving political weasels and I know you have mocked a few.

By the way Clyde, do you really view "live battle" as the ultimate trump card?  As if no one that was ever in battle was a douche or dumbass.  Nor is everyone else somehow less worthy of respect just because they haven't been shot at.  I respect the guy that shows up every day to do his job as a mechanic more that I respect a weasel like Milley.

My apologies
I don’t think you know what it means to serve especially at that level of this government.

Son, we live in a world that has walls, and those walls have to be guarded by men with guns. Who's gonna do it? You?  I have a greater responsibility than you could possibly fathom. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know; that Santiago's death, while tragic, probably saved lives. And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, *saves lives*. You don't want the truth because deep down in places you don't talk about at parties, you want me on that wall. You need me on that wall. We use words like honor, code, loyalty. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent defending something. You use them as a punchline. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very freedom that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it! I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way, Otherwise, I suggest you pick up a weapon and stand a post. Either way, I don't give a *damn* what you think you are entitled to!
This speech says it all as far as I am concerned.
Hopefully you will never have to lay your life on the line for anyone but yourself.
All the best Son.
There are those out there right now 24/7 defending your right to watch TV.

I don't consider my time with the opposite sex as a "battle".  Perhaps Miley does.  I don't care if the guy landed at Normandy.  He is, at the very least, a weasley politician at this point.  At worst, he is an agent of the Chinese Communist Party. As far as I am concerned, Mr. I-broke-the-chain-of-command-want-to-understand-white-rage-and-teach-crt-at-west-point-push-gender-neutral-pronouns is unfit for his position.  Run for congress if you want to act like an idiot.

Take a close look at General Miley.  If that guy isn't an in-the-closet-cross-dresser, I don't know who is.  I swear you can see remnants of eye shadow on the guy's eyes.
