The race was a cavalcade! There was an EDM dance party on the “beach” and I am pretty sure that none of those people even knew that there was a race going on. Same situation at the “club” in the promenade with the $1000 per bottle table service.
I was tremendously lucky. As the result of a chance conversation with one of the COOs of my company - AutoNation - I was invited to a private area in the stadium. They closed off the top loop of the helix for just the 100 or so of us and we had a view
of the hairpin leading back to the pit entrance / front straight. They provided food and drink. For the record the Lobster Roll was stupendous!
As usual, you don’t see much of the race from the stands - but I had timing and scoring and the ShyTV feed on cell phones.
The “show” itself was amazing but a slog. Everything is broken into different campuses. Often, at least from my search in the stadium, there was no direct way from where you were to where you wanted to go. So, lots of walking and there were whole areas
- the beach and yacht club, for instance, that I never even tried to get to. Otherwise, it was typical Miami in every good way, beautiful weather, beautiful people, awesome party atmosphere.
EVERYTHING was ridiculously expensive. Food - as previously mentioned, swag - I saw a $200 baseball cap and a $400 T-Shirt, and of course tickets. The souvenirs especially were nuts. I am the guy that gets his and hers tees at every concert - there
was NOTHING that had enough “value” to get my wallet out of my pocket.
I am thankful that I got to go and had a mild VIP treatment. FWIW, from the helix we were looking down on the REAL VIPS being limoed and golf carted from parking (or the helipad) to the back entrance to the Paddock Club. Those were some seriously fancy
/ pricey seats.
If you get a chance, go. It is a crappy way to watch the race but the party is worth it. I hope I get to do it again next year. That reminds me, gotta hand write some thank you notes today - never too early to butter up the guys that issue the credentials!
TL:DR - I had a great time - if you get the opportunity, go … but bring your wallet.
