No hydraulics in the Skyliner, electro-mechanical.
More solenoids and wire than the old local phone exchange. Dad worked on them back in the day, most off the problems were solenoid, limit switch or alignment. He was one of the few mechanics at the dealership with the patience and skill to work with them.

I agree that the Superamerica is flawed but, there are other duds out there that deserve some lambasting too.
One that comes to mind is the Ford Skyliner. Every one that I’ve seen in person has had problems with the top and/or it will fail in that moment of operation. Ancient hydraulics and old school electronics - which I wouldn’t be surprised if it used vacuum tubes! – would probably be difficult to source and/or impossible to repair today. Not to mention that despite being as big as half a football field, the trunk in those things make a Lotus Elise look like a luxurious grand tourer.
But wow, what an impression it made on your neighbor when he’d see that parked in your driveway! That’s the point!
Like so many aspects of car design and marketing, there’s something that needs to grab the customer’s attention and it’s no different from the pedestrian, entry-level buyer to the uber-rich. Moreso in that category because, even though there have never been this many “rich” people in the world, they have a bevy of choice out there. The smart ones are the ones who don’t care and trade in once the novelty wears off. They don’t get stuck with the headaches of dealing with parts breaking 5, 6, or more years down the road (no pun intended). Ford or Ferrari, don’t matter. That’s where we, the third, forth or twentieth owners come in!
Necessity is the mother of creation so, given enough time, there’ll be people who’ll be clever enough to figure out a way to fix their car, and maybe others. I would not be surprised if a company comes out with a repair, or conversion kit for the SA in the future (hell, maybe Ferrari themselves!). Look at the rising number of companies doing manual conversions on F1 cars. Or restomods in general - best of both worlds, classic looks and modern bits to make it actually reliable.
In the end, they’re just things. It’s more fun than looking at bank statements (although there are some people who enjoy that too), or taking the bus.

It is really an ugly mark on Ferrari.
Conceptually, I think the SuperAmerica flipping hard top was a great idea.
Somehow it fleshed out to a major problem and ultimately, a joke.
The Barchetta hard top... now that WAS ugly. Yet, still more appealing than the soft top. I remember someone bringing one to the historic races a Laguna Seca and Jimmy Hague said it looked like a ill fitting sports bra with a back window. The driver said the best part about it was that it leaked... in dense fog.
I hate to say it, but.... when Ferrari has these sort of ideas, they should farm out the engineering to Toyota.

When I worked at Ferrari Los Gatos/Bentley Silicone Valley I was voluntold to put the temporary top on the first Barchetta we got.
Our GM wanted the customer to see it.
Once the GM came in to the service department he said that the customer was on the way and to remove the top ASAP.
The rear of top very closely the rear of the top on the Monkeemobile.

Superamerica was better than Barchetta. At least it has a useable roof - when it works.
Putting the temp top on the Barchetta was a recipe for using the supports to ruin your paint
