Dino or Synthetic oil should be changed yearly ... they are both affected by moisture contamination, which turns them acidic.

If you are driving the vehicles 1.000 miles or more it's your call on the filter.  I'd at least add a magnet to the filter to make sure any metal contaminants are caught.

Whatever happened to Jenkins?  He has been off the list for a few years it seems.

In addition, certain types of synthetic oils like phosphate esters and dibasic esters are known to react with water, which leads to the destruction of the base stock and the formation of acids. It is not just the base oil that can be affected by moisture contamination.

So guys,
I want some advice. Opinions but of course if you can back this up with personal experience please let me know…..

I have two red sports cars in my heated and dry garage here in Stockholm. The 512tr and my 1995 Miata, both mint condition. Winters here are very long and the driving season pretty short. May- Sept if I’m lucky. With work and both cars I seem to manage about 300 miles per year on the Miata and maybe 1000-1500 on the 512tr. ( until I decide to do a long rode trip)
So here’s my question- both cars run synthetic oil. What’s the view on ( or more to say, what’s the point on changing the oil filter every year when I do oil changes?). Is it really necessary?
To be fair I don’t even change the Mazda oil every year, it’s always clean, storage conditions are perfect and while I know the arguments for changing oil due to age isn’t the filter more a “miles and gallons through” type of thing?
Ok, I get it, you say filters are cheap but I’m wondering if it’s necessary? And the filter on the 512tr is over 150.00 USD. If the oil has only 1-2000k miles on it, is it really worth changing the filter?
I do the service myself. Oil is about 15 USD per litre here, I was just thinking if the filter was worth changing and why. It’s extra work ( on the Mazda I have to remove the engine brace, on the 512tr, well it’s just something else to get to..)
What do you guys think. Is it necessary? Use to be filters were 4-5 bucks, even the bald wins for my 328 ( still have a few unwrapped and new) were about 8-10 dollars in the early 2000s. So it got me thinking.

Joined the list in 2001, Steve on the West Coast, rich internet guy, ( he bought a F40 way back, remember him, was the first person I spoke to), got my 328 for 22k GBP, drove the hell out of it for 6 years. Way back then I told Clyde I really wanted a 512tr…he offered me first right of refusal when he sold it….20 years later he kept his word.

 Hear, hear!

I joined the FList ca. 1997/8 and flame wars were minimal.

There is plenty of negativity elsewhere and best to keep mum if a lister’s style or comments annoy you.

I lurk more than post, but I am a very long time lister. I also don’t read every post, but the recent ones caught my attention. I have no idea who the people are that seem to be trolling and expressing personal opinions about other listers. Maybe they don't realize the early tenets of this list/forum, if you have something of value or help to say, say it, but otherwise keep your outside opinions to yourself i.e. best watches, best guns, etc. which the lister's agreed to a long time ago.

With that said; I have known Clyde for some 20/30 years and have been a guest in his house after our yearly lister Talladega track events many times. He helped me with my engine rebuild and tons of good advice along the way. So, I respect the man, and I'm on his side plain and simple.

However, it seems we've lost our way lately. Personally attacking one another is not the 'list' way! Tom Reynolds, first lister to make a contact list of the listers, so we would have names and addresses, if our cars needed anything while on the road or we needed help was the way 'to help' fellow Ferrariist, that's not what is happening now.

Big Head Dennis Lou still owes me $5 (inside joke).
