It'd be interesting to know who bought the car and what demographic they fit into.
It's no secret that Japanese cars, especially modern "classics" are now being considered collector-worthy. This could be a perfect example of a Gen X'er who's done well and has some money to burn (literally). This is essentially a showroom-fresh virgin, bought
purely for short-term speculative reasons. Don't be surprised when it pops up on BaT next year (hey Erik, what's that you said about catching falling knives?...) .
Problem I see is that modern collectors are not taking into consideration of how they'll be able to maintain these cars in the future and, are foolish to sink so much cash into something which has the potential to be a brick in another 10 to 15 years. Maybe
they don't care.
cLyDe brought up an excellent point a long time ago of 288 GTO or F40 owners not driving their cars because the Marelli-Weber ECU's are unobtainable. Somewhat true, but at least those have old-school IC chips, caps and resistors that can be de-soldered from
the board and replaced. Any capable nerd can do that to keep them going (or just ditch the whole works and Megasquirt it. Probably run way better too).
But these modern machines? Forget it. Just an expensive throw-away appliance on four wheels.
And is it any wonder why there's so much animosity towards the rich?
Peter
