When I was 10 or 12, mid- 50’s, we lived in Inglewood on Van Ness just above Century Blvd – the highway to LAX.

Clyde I’m sure you know the area.

 

As such North American was just down the street and I’d get to see all sorts of fighter jets coming for their final – is that right?  Gear down, etc.

Article slightly incorrect – incident happened at night after dinner – I saw it happen.  Rainy night. I was washing dishes, saw what looked like a giant flash bulb flash and ensuing fire.  Thought it was due to a transformer explosion as they had happed earlier elsewhere.

 

BUT – the pilot did not “blow himself out” as the article states – he hopped out, to the right, when the plane stopped moving.  However, in his haste forgot to unhook his oxygen mask. As he later told us, he was faced with an instant question: ‘do I get back in and undo mask hose or let the hose unhook itself and hit me in the face? I hopped back in.”

 

Oh yeah – 4 years infantry from 1963 to July 1967 then 8 years Artillery and reserves.  Good time had by all.  Viva Ft. Sill and the Latonian Hotel.
