Later versions of the F-104 the seat went up

Remember the technology back then wasn’t good 

And that seat your wore your parachute 

With the later versions like the MB-7

You wore a harness that attaches to the seat where the parachute is

Someone asked me years ago about my

Office chair 

It’s a Martin Baker 7 ejection seat 

It was the ejection seat in the F-4 

It was a zero zero seat 

In other words you could use it on the ground and still get a good chute

Initiating a zero zero ejection on the

Carrier flight deck

What’s surprising is how high the canopy flies up allowing the crew seats to clear before going up the rails as we used to say

The F-14 canopy was a single piece and it had to weigh a lot, but it flew up and out of the way, impressive to say the least. 

The flight deck is I believe 70feet off the ocean and those two fliers went up at least 50feet you can see both guys under the canopy as they settled into the water!
