The RIO could rotate the handle and make a dual or just him ejecting 

Most crews left it in the dual mode 

It was the safest way to fly in my opinion

But I have to tell you that explosive charge that blew that canopy clear was

Too funny, Col Graves.  He could punch out through the sky-light in his office.

 

Ick, Clyde... that thing doesn't look comfortable at all.  A lot of 
advancements between the MB-7 and the GRU-7A I sat in.   This is the early 
version.  Later versions (after I left)  had the canopy breakers (devil's 
horns) just in case.

This is my office chair 

It’s a functioning seat minus the rocket motors and O2 bottles 

The parachute is right behind you 

You attach yourself to it with a harness along with wearing a horse collar life 
vest
