I think BMW still does development work, but the modern buyer is so casual they just can’t truly be themselves anymore. 

If the auto industry lets say started in 1900, the first 90-100 years where manufacturers making cars to their identity and the last 25 has been making cars too tailor made to what people would buy and thus the generic garbage we see today. 

Nobody gets away with it, except maybe Lotus and Alfa Romeo, possibly Aston Martin, but you can see how they’ve always struggled.
