No Capital Gains tax.
I held the shares in Canada's "TFSA" savings system (Tax-Free Savings Account). Any earnings are tax-free, once cashed out (after held in the account for more than a year). This was the brainchild of the late Jim Flaherty (Minister of Finance) and former Prime
Minister Steven Harper.
Regardless, I'm not going to spend that kind of money refurbishing them. At least here in Canada.
FWIW, I don't have any intention of selling the car. In my opinion, having the luggage set would be a good selling feature in the future. Save for a factory car cover, this Mondial is COMPLETE. The next time I present it at a FCA Annual, I'd hope it could get
the Schedoni Award at least. If not, so be it, I'm happy otherwise.

The way I see it, you paid $4,800 in stock value for that luggage plus will pay cap gains tax on roughly $4,250 in gains ($850 at 20%) plus refurbishing costs of $7,200 plus sales taxes so your costs will be closer to $14,000.
Or you could probably commission a passable counterfeit while enjoying a vacation in Hong Kong.
I’m sure you did the calculations going in but that is a nice addition to your Mondial.
Just sell the luggage separately if you ever decide to sell the car.

Quoted me $1500 per bag (hours + reline in leather material) = $7200 for the set. Plus our taxes I'd be in it for $10K....
It'll be cheaper for me to fly to the Philippines, or Vitenam, or even Indonesia. Stay for 12 to 14 days, have an awesome vacation and in the meantime, bring the bags on as cargo (and pay the exorbitant baggage fees), have all bags relined with genuine leather
over there, all for a fraction of having it done here (I've already received one quote).
So much for "elbows up"...
