The current "12v" system uses a 12v battery with the alternator charging at 14v. Multiply both numbers by 3 and you get a "42v" system which will use a 36v battery with the alternator charging at 42v.

        I've read that when the 42v system finally arrives they'll only
run the power-hungry items on the 42v system (starter, power seat &
windows, etc) with a separate 12v system for lower power items (interior &
exterior lighting, ECUs, stereo, etc).  That way they can use light-duty
12v switches and bulbs instead of heavier-duty items designed for 42v.
