Also in Taxachusetts, filled up the truck last week at $2.26/gallon. This was at a generic station that had big signs promoting the cheap gas. When you pulled in, you discovered that it was **86** octane, and that 87 octane was $2.46 - which is still cheap, but no better than the generic stations down the road offering 87 octane at $2.39-$2.50. Still, I filled up on 86 octane. Why? Because NO DISTRIBUTOR IN THIS STATE carries 86 octane. It's the same friggin gas as the 87 octane, but the station owner is trying to pull cars off the street with the big $2.26 sign, then convince people that they need to shell out for the 87 octane. They also misleadingly label the 86 octane "economy", while the 87 is "regular" (free full service; you have to specify the grade, and most drivers don't get out of the car and don't notice). Grrrr. So I happily asked for the 86 octane, which was probably sold at cost, and sucked up 28 gallons. Woo-hoo! BTW, another annoying trick, as gas prices plummet, some stations are offering $2.39 regular, but charging $2.93 for premium 92/93 octane - and guess which is the ONLY price advertised on the street sign? A $0.54 spread? No thanks. I'll go to the Shell down the street.
