I lived in Hermosa Beach for 20 years and we have a 3.5yo son, here are a
few places we liked-

Restarurants:
Cheese & Olives/Italian - Venice, at the end of Washington St - don't miss,
be prepared to wait
Banzai Sushi - Hermosa
Bottle Inn/Italian - Hermosa
Hennessys - Hermosa/Manhattan
Eat at Joes - Redondo/Hermosa
Rosa's/Mexican dive - Hermosa

Playtime:
Hermosa/Manhattan beaches - anywhere(there are swings on 22nd in Hermosa)
Valley Park - Hermosa corner of Valley/Gould
Live Oak Park - Manhattan
Redondo Pier - watch the fishermen, play around at the various shops

Other:
Neighborhood Church in Palos Verdes(we were married there, beautiful
grounds, excellent pastor)
Venice Beach - stroll around and watch the weirdo's
Acquarium experience at end of Manhattan Pier
Long Beach Acquarium - Long Beach
Ferrari gathering every Sunday morning- Italian deli/store approximately
half way around Palos Verdes ocean side(can't remember the name)

Sorry for the OT post.  Looking for some suggestions as to what to do in Los
Angeles next week.  Taking the family out to Redondo beach to visit my
sister, arriving Wed the 8th, departing the morning of the 13th.  Not
necessarily car-related, but, hey, I can hope, right?!  My wife and I will
have our 3 yr old and 17 month old daughters, and will also have my
similarly-aged nephews, so kid-friendly suggestions especially appreciated.
Good places to eat, hang out, interesting stuff to check-out, whatever.
